I live in Durham and the temperature today is 11 degrees centigrade.
I have recently taken delivery of plug cherry tomatoes and planted them in containers.
I have an electric heater in the greenhouse.
What is the minimum temperature to be maintained for continuous growth and to avoid any problems.

Hi Decka - and welcome!

I'd usually not worry too much about temperature going as low as this, toms actually require lots of light, more than heat - they'll get that when the summer eventually arrives, but you should be fine as long as your GH doesn't get down to frost levels of course!

All ours are in an unheated GH now, and some are being gradually hardened-off to go outside in a few weeks time!

Good luck, anyway - you'll enjoy the advice and banter here!

You need to be able to maintain a temperature of at least 10C, especially at night, just frost-free isn't really enough. If they get cold they take on a blue tinge, and once this happens they don't usually recover.
Are they still small enough to put them in the greenhouse during the day and bring them indoors overnight, that'll save a bit on the electric bill ;)

"If they get cold they take on a blue tinge"

Know the feeling, Mum...

You're right of course, but I try not to heat the GH from now on, as some of the other stuff doesn't need to be warm!

It's an odd 'limbo' time now, isn't it, usually fingers and toes are crossed, but it all gets going fairly soon...
