Husbands 'hot bin' compost solution
« on: March 02, 2020, 10:52 »
Ever since we had a rat problem I have put kitchen waste in a plastic dalek on a solid surface. I considered a hotbin composter but when I realised they are not actively heated just well insulated I asked my husband if he could think of a way to insulate it.

His solution. He has placed the dalek in the centre of one of our empty compost bins and  turned the garden compost in surrounding it, using the garden compost to insulate and heat the kitchen waste. It is toasty in there!

Wire mesh under a compost bin usually stops rats - just make sure the wire mesh is sturdy and has small holes that won't let rats in (or mice).

Grubby paws, that’s ingenious. I do have a hotbin at home but could do with some ideas for the allotment....
