Onions in between the dahlias? Running out of space
« on: November 24, 2019, 21:31 »
I impulse bought a bag of overwintering onions but what with the garlic, leeks, broccoli, strawberry bed etc have very little space. There is clear ground between my 4 dahlias which are at 1-2 m of each other ( now of course cut down and covered in straw).  Could I squeeze some onions in there? In the hope they’ll be well underway before the dahlias get big in May- June next year? Thanks for any advice.

That might be a bit of a squeeze to get them planted between the dahlia tubers so I'd go for sowing them in grow-bags so they can slowly get rooted during winter.
I don't like bananas unless it's raining. (A quote from my great-niece).

Thank you goosegirl. I might start them off in pots ( don’t have grow bags) then move them when the brassicas are out.

Actually, a better idea than pots are deep seed trays or cat litter trays with a couple of drainage holes because you can get more sets in them than you can pots.
