Soil texture
« on: February 07, 2008, 20:50 »
Most sites go on about soil texture and the perfect "loam", iv'e just been digging my ground over and all the beds are different. One is a sticky mess mixed with cow manure. The others appear to be a better combination of manure and left over building sand from our extension two years ago. The addition of sand seems to make a more pliable and workable medium. Also after raking the soil is less clumpy and has less that gathers in the rake.

There is a test you can do where you mix half a jar of soil with water and watch how it settles.

Is it worth adding more sand to the other beds or leaving to settle??

It may simply be a bit wet at the moment, WM. I wouldn't add more sand until you see how the soil looks when it's a tad drier.
