Carrots
« on: July 16, 2019, 10:13 »
Can anyone tell me how long (roughly) it takes carrot seed to germinate?

I sowed a pot with some Chantenay Red last week (11 ltr pot), about 4 days in I read that they don't like lots of sun so I moved the pot into a slightly shadier spot, the next day up they pop lots of little seedlings.

Is there any truth in the fact I read about the sun? What are the ideal conditions for carrot germination & growing.

Thanks
Ches

I'm not sure but seedlings do like a bit of shade; either that or it was just a coincidence.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Here in lancs it can take 2 weeks for outdoor germination. I sowed some into deep pots as a trial in my potting shed and they germinated in a week. I'm going to try to grow these in 14" deep pots in the shed as an experiment.

I see little green dots around a week, but I cover carrots, beets, parsnips, radish..... with a white 'cloth' at the start, for about 10 days to 2 weeks.
Maybe this speeds it up.

I should have done this. Second sowing of radish (2 weeks ago) yet to show their faces

I use this, Ches.

It's in Dutch, but then you get an impression of the material.
I think esp. beets, parsnip and radish (also the black one) like quite some moist. (beets and radish also while growing). With the unpredictable weather of the last few years it is harder to create a stable environment. This helps.
