what Strawberries shall I get?
« on: July 09, 2019, 16:06 »
The strawberries that I inherited with my plot are minging.
they taste like soil that's been buried in boring for a year.
And they keep being eaten by creatures.

So, my current plan is to dig a new area and plant some actually nice strawberries that I can eat.
What do you recommend please?
(Supplier names would be very gratefully received)

I got Elsanta free when I bought some Florence on offer this year, and the Elsanta taste much nicer than the Florence. Super-market Elsanta taste of nothing at all, so not what I expected when I tried them

'Mara des Bois' are really tasty but are perpetual, you won't get a glut but rather a few at a time, which works for us as we eat them with cereal and don't have to worry about storage.  Cannot recommend highly enough!

I like Honoye, just got to be careful as they runner like crazy. Good crop, nice size and flavour.

I've got both Honoye and Mara des Bois and would recommend both for flavour - the Honoyes make fantastic jam!

My main aim is to sit with my hand in a bowl and go bowl-mouth-bowl-mouth until there's nothing left

All I could do with these soil-borings was jam!

I used to eat strawberry jam every day, but I just don't eat that many sandwiches these days!

When we created a new strabs bed the other year we got Elegance from D. T. Brown. They have big red firm berries and the taste is superb! Not too sweet and not too tart and rich in flavour.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I planted Alice ('cos it was me Mam's name) and I've had good tasty crops, even after replanting runners three times!

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
