Growing onions for pickling

This may be a daft question, but should I just grow my normal onions to be pickled & pull them earlier, or is there a smaller variety that is better?  My husband doesn't like shallots pickled, so they are not an option!  Many thanks

You usually buy and grow silverskin onions for pickling. They are smaller and white like the ones you buy from the supermarket already in jars. Like these for instance.

I always grow and pickle shallots, but I like strong pickles, throw a chilli or two into each jar....
