NPK for BNS & Potatoes
« on: April 20, 2019, 08:25 »
Hi All,
My 1st post for a good few years, I've still got my allotment but due to other commitments I don't grow as many veggies as I once did.

I'm growing ButterNut Squash in the open ground & maincrop spuds in pots. I want to feed both to get a maximum crop & would like to know what NPK they need to get them going and then later in the season when fruits and tubers are growing. I'm assuming growmore NPK early in their growth but not sure what NPK I should feed later in the season.
Thanks
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Hi Fatbelly and welcome back  :)

I always give my squash plants pelleted chicken manure, but Gromore is good.  I grow in open ground and they always do well.  I don't give them anything special later in the season, but tomato food a good all purpose feed for fruit and flowers.

What can help with a squash is to limit the number of fruit and cut back excess trailing growth once fruits have set.  It concentrates their energy of producing a few, good quality fruit and gives them the best chance to develop hard skins so they store.  Lots of little fruit means lots of skin and seeds and I think you end up with less to actually eat.

I only grow first earlies in pots, so can't advise on main crop spuds.

For pots I use BFB for planting then a light sprinkle of manure pellets to keep the haulms in good condition. I'm also an advocate of using dilute sea weed feed not just as a booster but also to provide some minerals that may be lacking.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

From memory our potato fertiliser is 6:10:10.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ah, so potash and potassium are in a higher ratio than nitrogen. Thinking about it that makes a lot of sense because you're trying to promote the growth of roots rather than leaves. Would tomato fertiliser do the same job?

I use the same as Yorkie 6:10:10 for my potato's and a nitrogen based for my brassicas but I have to say in moderation

If the potato is a modified stem surely anything that produces strong growth in stem tissue would be best.

I planted Charlotte yesterday and dug a trench then put in 3 inches of well rotted horse poo and stuck the tuber in the middle of that.  I seem to remember fresh cow pat being used similarly too.
