Espalier cherry formed, now what?
« on: February 18, 2019, 12:26 »
I've had an espalier cherry for a few years now and it has produced a marvelous crop.  Whar can I do (if not too late) to prepare it for the forthcoming season.  There are numerous short woody shoots growing from the main branches, what do I do with them?

Many thanks in advance but please don't refer me to a web page telling me how to produce an espalier, that bit's been done.  Tis the aftercare I need help on?

Cheers,  Tony. :)
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Cherries are tip bearing Tony, I'm surprised you've got it trained as an espalier and not a fan, but if it works dont knock it.  You should be able to tell now if the buds are flowers or leaves.

If the tree is the shape you want just a little summer pruning to reduce the growths on the side branches should be all that's needed. Don't go mad at it the first year as I have a feeling you'll be cutting off the next seasons fruiting wood. If you don't mind a reduced crop you can keep them short - just a few buds.  I'm dong the same thing here on standard trees to keep the height down.

Many thanks for that info Lardman.

Just spent the day re-rigging the support lines, it's looking quite professional!

Looking forward to the fruits of my labours.

Cheers,  Tony. :D

And today I've been sewing up the rips in the mesh caused by an overabundance of snow.

 I'll do a more permanent job...sometime when I have a minute!

Cheers,   Tony.
