Thinking of trying to go veggie
« on: February 04, 2008, 10:30 »
My 6 sisters and dad are veggie and always have been. I thought I might give it a 'test run' for a few weeks. I LOVE veg and don't think I'll miss meat (except the pork crackling off the roast..mmmm)
But my OH is a red blooded carnivore through and through so no persuading him
So I'll have to cook meat for him and a veg alternative for me. I was wondering if anyone has got any tips for cooking meals for a veggie and meat eater at the same time easily; for example veggie version of cottage pie, bolognaise, curry etc

Some tasty recipies would be good

I know what you mean, I'm not even going to try and convince him. What would be really good is some recipes that 'split the dish'. So I could start cooking something and then split it in half before I add the meat, so making half meat and half veggie meal. easy hopefully! Then I don't have to cook two whole separate dishes :)

I love cooking which is perhaps why i love growing my own veg and fruit. I make at least one meat free meal a week and more oftern than not several. My husband doesn't always notice, roasted butternut squash stuffed with spinach, cherry tomatoes, courgettes, pepper with goats cheese - he asked me to cook it again and my brothers who are defo meat eaters really enjoy this.

Not necessarily feel different, but 99% of the veggies I know look dreadful.  They all seem pale, pasty, drawn and to top it all allways seem ill with a cold or something.  Half of them top their diet up with vitamin supplements as well so all meat savings get spent at Holland and Barratt's

Well I must be in the 1% that are healthy (ish)

I don't think having a cold is anything to do with being veggie or not

I think the seven veggies in my immediate family must also be included in that 1%, they are all very healthy, active and don't take any supplements. Hence why I am curious to try it.

I'd say go for it, if it doesn't work out then what have you lost?!

I'm afraid I'm no help on cooking meat/veggie meals - Peter and I are both veggie.

I'll ask my sister, her husband is a meat eater and herself and their two children are veggie

Exactly, you don't know until you try it.
That would be great if you could ask your sister, also any tips on resisting temptation would be gratefully received
