Oh yess!!  Over the dreary, dark hill now, and on to light and, hopefully, warmth.

Once the winterval is over, we've gained quite a lot of new minutes...

I bet there's someone somewhere thinking up an indeterminate name for such great natural event as a solstice. It's usually the Ministry for Obfuscation which decides, especially as the magic word 'equal' comes into play...

(Stop being an old grump, Growster)...OK...

 Do you mean the Equinoxes, those days with equal light and dark?

Current daylength in central UK is 7hrs 40min.
by 10 Jan     8hrs.

31.Jan    9hrs
16.Feb  10hrs
3.March   11hrs
18.March   12hrs

So it'll start slowly getting longer and then realy speed-up in Feb and March!

Yes we actually start getting an extra 2 mins of daylight a day. No wonder the pagans celebrated the winter solstice, such an important date of the year. Let's face it, if it wasn't for the pagans there would be no Christmas. :nowink:

As it's not a constant lengthening of day, this week will see 3 mins extra by 29th Dec, but a week in early February will see an extra 26 mins, and that's when you can really notice it.

I seem to recall that the 25th was originally the date on which the "rebirth" of the Sun was celebrated, and so was then adopted as the date to celebrate the birth of The Ligth of the World ie Christ ... fitted in just rigth!
