Hello, have just got my first plot in York.
« on: September 04, 2018, 23:11 »
Hello, Iíve just taken on an allotment plot that has been left for about three years. I started growing veg on a friends plot and realised how much I liked it so decided to take the plunge. Iím in the process of clearing at the moment but am fortunate to have inherited a rickety shed, two small apple trees, red currant bushes, early raspberries, gooseberries and rhubarb!
I have a big job ahead of me (as passers-by remark!) but hope to learn a bit as Iím a complete beginner, especially with the aforementioned fruit!

Brilliant and Welcome!
Was it already covered or have you done that?
There's loads of good advise on here, if you can't find it, just ask.

Cheers Pescador, I sheeted over the large area and cleared all the way along a beech hedge, dealt with brambles and a cherry tree that was doing nothing but being a bully! Iíve yet to test the soil but it seems silty. The allotment association have since cut down the leylandii, sycamores and elder that grew on the boundary and encroached on the plot.
Thereís so much on this site, I shall have to delve in when I can, a bit like the allotment!

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new lotty  :D

Which allotment site are you on in York?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Ah, are they the ones where you can cut through them down to Albermarle Rd? It looks very sheltered and quiet.
Theyíve cut all the trees that bordered onto mine now, my poor shed (named The Shambles ) is now exposed and I have cut down a huge buddleia that was pushing the fence over. I have heaps of stuff everywhere now!
