Do remember when there was an orchard behind us, now a few houses that they used earwigs.
The orchard owners used to hang pots in the trees with hay in, that was used as breeding for the earwigs.
The earwigs do no damage to the apple tree or its fruit but decimate the aphids.

If its only a small tree, just a water spray will probably shift them.

Hi Lettice,

Thank you for your reply, I have seen reports that soap and water is a good deterrent but I am not sure how to arrive at a suitable mix - what soap and how much water?  I know there are insect sprays available but the tree is covered in small fruits so I am reluctant to use.

Mike.
