liquidising comfrey
« on: March 28, 2018, 15:25 »
I want to have a go with comfrey and nettle as feeds this year.  I'm wondering what effect chucking it into a blender/liquidiser first would have on the process.  Does anyone on here do this?

Comfrey stalks are quite fibrous, I can’t see them liquidising very well without bunting it up. I personally just harvest them into the wheelbarrow then take the shears to them & chop them up as much as I can be bothered before filling an old water but with them. I then place a piece of wood/old plastic lid on top of the leaves & weight it down with bricks or bottles of water & allow the juice to drip out of the bottom(old butt is cracked no jokes there please lol or drill holes) & catch juice in another tub. Dilute to taste 😊

Snowdrops, do you put any water in the butt, or a lid on to stop rain getting in please? I have only 4 comfrey plants so I am thinking of doing it in a bucket.

I'm just wondering if the blending would speed up the process and get rid of the brick and funnel bit.  I take the point about stalks though...is most of the goodness in the leaves anyhow?

Yes I put a lid on & no I don’t put any water in. You can add the comfrey to a bucket of water but you get a more dilute mixture that way. It smells bad enough as I do it but with added water it’s so much worse  and there’s so much more. A bucket would work fine

I don't think you'll like the blender very much afterwards if you do that...;0)

We just chuck the whole lot in a barrel, nettles and comfrey including stalks, top it up with water and leave it to rot down.

The stuff we made last year has formed such a good crust on the top, that there are some weeds beginning to show...

Best free fertilizer there is in my opinion!
