My soil doesn't like water...
« on: March 06, 2018, 13:03 »
Hi all,

I've just started to plant up some seeds and my compost doesn't seem to like water - in fact, it seems to repel it? When watered, it will sit on the top of the soil and will not soak in... If I scratch the surface of the compost off, its bone dry!

Any idea's why or how to solve this would be amazing!

It sounds like the manufacturer has forgotten to add the wetting agent, 2 years ago our allotment shop had an assignment like that, they contacted the supplier & I think got a refund & an explanation. Might be worth taking it back to where you bought it

Thanks!

I brought it six months ago and it was fine, so seems a bit odd and I guess I wont be able to return it. I folded the bag over and weighed it down in the shed since last use.  Can I do anything at home to sort it?

Maybe you can mix it with some soil in a bucket, water and knead it until it has a nice moist feel to it and then use it?

Perhaps if you are quick you can use the seeds you have sown again.

Try adding a small squirt of washing up liquid to the water, sometimes it helps.

It's probably because your compost has become very dry. Try standing the pots in water, and the compost will draw it up.

I tend to agree with this!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Brilliant, thanks all. I tried the fairy liquid idea and this didn't seem to have an effect. I'll try sitting the trays in water tonight.

Thanks
