parsnips
I don't want a long parsnip, I just want something that's worth eating.
I had more this yer than ever before, all 12 of them out of 4 8ft rows.

I sowed at the right time
I hadn't manure the ground for 2 years
We have no stonesin our silty soil in S.Lincs
I kept the ground watered regularly during the drought, but my few parsnips that did germinate are short and forked!!!!

So what did I do wrong???

Maybe try another variety next year? My Avon Resisiters seem quite good but they took ages to germinate
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I hear the pixies do it because they only have very small hands  snd the the manure goblins cant see them when they stick two fingers up

Sorry karl, I'm a bit thick at times, what do the pixies do???  make the parsnips short and forked so the manure goblins think the parsnips are the fingers????   But wouldn't they have to pull the parsnips out of the ground to do that????

Or does this all happen underground so we can't see them?   :)  :)

I may try another variety next year, but do I share my bathtub between the carrots and the parsnips, or do I just put the carrots in there and put the parsnips in the ground as normal?

I wanted some raised beds, but as we may be moving soon, OH says its not worth it.  Mind you, we were only supposed to be here for 2 years!!!!

dug a few parsnips this morning and noticed that the some of the leaves are burnt (the roots are fine) i can only say it looks like blight ,
2 weeks ago they were fine.
anybody got any ideas ?
feed the soil not the plants

I've got a bit of that on my parsnips, but as long as the root is OK...

Haven't dug any up yet, waiting for a frost to sweeten them first.  What I can't figure is how you can get brilliant perfect roots and a forked weird shaped snip in the same row.

:)  I've been digging up parsnips for weeks now, fair sized ones too but being a first timer I forgot to write down the variety. I know what you mean about the frost John but we have so many we've been eating them early, even give some away to fellow lotties who didn't have any luck with theirs.

... our allotment is about four rake lengths away from the river and we have lovely sandy loam, but I hadn't realised just how good it was until I pulled my parsnips ... 3 foot long!

Chubby but not woody ... blummin' marvellous!

I want more, more, more!!
