Moonlight runners
« on: July 12, 2017, 20:58 »
Out of the blue' Suttons have sent me a voucher for £5 to compensate for poor results from Moonlight runner bean seed. I had not complained but as it happens I did have a failure with them. The problem must be widespread as they appear to emailed anyone who ordered them.

Anyone else had this?

I never bought any Hurst Green Shaft, (from anyone), but the question is "was it the "Moonlight" only from Suttons that was a poor result or was other sellers "moonlight" poor as well?"

I bought Moonlight from Dobies, and they not only germinated really well, but I am already picking them.  They seem to be well in advance of the other variety I sowed.  I started them in cells in a cold greenhouse, and then put the resulting plants in as soon as they had a couple of well developed leaves.  I can't remember if they are supposed to be self-pollinating, but they are certainly producing a really good crop at the moment.

They are self pollinating. They are crossed with French beans.

Aren't Dobies and Sutton's part of the same group?

Salmo, just accept the voucher gratefully.. not often you get a fiver towards seed like that!

Our moonlights are fine, a few will be  ready to pick for Sunday dinner 😉

Googling shows that Suttons bought Dobies in 2014, so, yes they are part of the same Group. Congratulations Mum2mj.

But then there was a management buy out and Suttons became independent again.
