Well as many of you know I'm new this year to keeping hens and I bought 3 from a guy in Throckley for £1 each.

This was what they looked like when I first got them (sorry for poor quality of pics - disposable camera)

and this is what they look like now!!

They are so happy where they are (if a little bonkers) and I'm really glad I got them because they are so funny when I'm down on the lottie... not much gets done anymore, I just sit and watch them all day!

No not ex bats but were kept in pretty awful conditions - 12 hens to a 2m x 2m run and at least 2 cockerels in there so they probably didn't need any more attention like that!

Well done SnooziSuzi, they look to have recovered beautifully from previous mistreatment, they're a credit to you.

I know what you mean about watching chooks, I come home from work and on the pretence of feeding/cleaning spend some happy time with mine, they are experts at brightening up a bad day.

It is fantastic to see them looking so well.  The look like happy girls. Did it take long for all their feathers to grow back?

There is a guy up at my allotment who keeps hens in similar circumstances - then he sells their eggs advertised by a sign on his driveway as 'free range' black rock eggs - they arent black rock and they definately arent free range!! Everytime we go past their run we shove in random bit of greens etc for them as do a couple of other allotment holders.

not long - about 4-5 weeks.  it took longer for 2 of them to feel secure around me,  not sure how much human contact they had beforehand.

Unfortunately, in order to be classed as free range they only need to have free access to outside - nowhere does it say it has to be nice and green for them!  as for saying they're black rocks     what breed do you think they are?

Scary isnt it - is that the same for 'free range' eggs from the supermarkets? Maybe that was covered on the recent chicken programmes but we have no tv so didnt see them.

They are buff coloured hybrids - buff rocks?? About 15-20 to a pen 3foot by 2foot dirt run with attached hen house
