I dont think hes firing blanks he is an exellent cockerel who i bought from a Rhr breeder. He has been active with the hens
Its just that as ive been asked to sell my eggs at the auction i want to make sure they are fertile. Im confident they will hatch with good results given they are fertile.
Ive hatched eggs last year with good results but i cant do it by incubating them as i no longer have an incubator.
I just wanted a way to check the fertility by looking at the eggs inside.
There have been mentions about the germinal disc , i have checked only one egg so far and this is visible . If this is a way to check for fertility then thats ok .
I wouldnt usually think about this but as im selling the eggs for incubation i want to check them from fresh.

Never had a fertility problem myself  but sometimes older cocks are firing blanks at the beginning of the season.

I've had cocks produce empty eggs early on in the year and then have had very good results from the same birds just a couple of month later.

Thats good news babe

The most important thing is cleanlinss when it comes to incubators, many breeders have two.

They have one to'set' in. This is the one that they put the eggs in to start with. The eggs are taken out of this incubator at about 18 days and put into the 'hatching' incubator.

The setting incubator never has any eggs hatched in it, so there's never a build up of disease or germs.

im doing everything by the book.

i used inccy cleaner before i set the egs and let it dry naturally.

when i candled today i used gloves.

at 18 days i have to put a tray in under the eggs so that nothing goes into the mechanical bit.

im just glad the rcom does the temp and hum on its own, i never knew it was so complex until i read the books.
