raised bed
« on: May 17, 2017, 10:27 »
Well I have just planted out my first raised bed  :)  I was a bit reluctant to use it before the autumn because I have only just prep'd it but I had four really good St Pierre tomato plants left over after I had planted out my garden and given loads to friends and thought why waste them? I have to say the soil looked great it is so full of organic matter. It will be interesting to see how they do I also planted out some basil and parsley plants that I has left over so there can be some good comparisons between open ground and the raised bed. I do know though that extra watering will be required because it gets very hot down here in the high summer and I think the bit above the ground will dry out quickly but hey its going to be interesting. If this works out I can see me making quite a few more as the materials are not too expensive and it is possible to protect the crops should it be required I may end up having two of my growing areas converted to raised beds and the  biggest area saved for open growing beans, onions and stuff that grows in longer rows.

If you can find some material to mulch with, that may help stop them drying out as quickly as they otherwise would do.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I imagine the watering is less of an issue at the moment!
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.
