Starting again...thinking of a potager garden
« on: May 15, 2017, 16:49 »
Hi All

I hope your well and the plots are productive?

I've just given up my plot because I've brought a new house. :)
The house needs a lot of work and I wont have much time for the garden.
However I HAD to bring some of my allotment plants with me. Mainly the soft fruits.

I'm looking at having a portage garden fruit/veg/herbs/flowers all mixed. In 4 or 6 square beds in line with the 2 windows of the house.

I'm so unsure how to start. I instantly want to plant rows of vegs, does anyone have any tips?

I have 3 redcurrant plants and 3 blackcurrant plants which I plonked in 2 rows these look a bit boring and I'm not sure that anything will want to grow close to them. Any recommendations?

I'm very tempted to apply for a plot near the house next year, for the big crops I like spuds, squashes beets etc

Apply now as it  may well take a while. You'll miss having a plot.
I'm hopefully moving back to an old garden of mine in a month's time, long story,  but I wouldn't dream of giving up the totally different feel of my plot. It's not a garden, it's something else quite unique in some ways.

That sounds lovely, I have never done this myself but when I think of a potager there is always a formal symmetrical lay out of beds and then you could grow plants that are attractive and edible, eg runner beans/peas that have pretty flowers up attractive structures, rainbow chard, herbs, pot marigolds, sunflowers, etc. depending how much room you have and the sun/soil.

Take a look at Geoff Hamilton's potager garden, I bet it's on YouTube. You could have the fruit bush in the middle of a square & plant around it, I second putting your name down for a plot, it might take 3/4 years for you to be offered one if there's a long list
