Hi. I've got a small lawn on one side of my house that's not used for anything, bit of a waste really. I thought it would be great to have raised beds. Problem is it's behind my south facing house, so most of the day it's in the shade of the house. Maybe mid afternoon about this time of year it will start to get sun, although further down the lawn would be later as the sun comes around (although the other end may get some morning sun).

I wanted to grow strawberries, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, garlic, and pumpkin ready for October. Will it be possible? I've read leafy veg is ok in shade but I'm not bothered about leafy veg, id like some potatoes definitely and the others.

Thanks

Garlic and pumpkins really need to be in the sun, so not so sure they would work, but the others should grow ok with just afternoon sun.

Using SkyView app, at this time of the year, one end of the lawn would have morning sun to about 10:30, then afternoon from 4:30pm on.

Middle of the lawn would have sun to about 8:30 then about 16:00pm onwards.

The other end morning sun to about 9am then afternoon from 15:00 onward

Thinking of having 3 beds one in each of these positions.

Not totally accurate as I've taken the time a few times and seems to change using this app but maybe it's a good guide.

Assume in a few months it's more sun as it's higher.

Attached is a pic of said lawn behind north facing wall.

I want to do something useful with this space but don't know what else.

Hi, I have just reposted on a thread that I started 18 months ago about a very shady back yard.  Have a look at the suggestions people made on there and also my final photo which shows how successful things were!  Good luck.
