What is this?
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:07 »
I inherited two of these on my new plot - the last holder told me they were goji berries and I had trouble keeping a straight face. Having said that, I don't actually know what they are except that I think they are from the ribes family. But I have never seen these bright yellow flowers on one before - and sweetly scented. I can wait and see what appears, of course - but if anyone can put me out of my suspense?

According to RHS Goji has blue flowers. So not that.

I knew it wasn't goji - completely different type of plant. But nor is it a currant or gooseberry - or not one I or my fellow plotters can identify - though it looks like one.

Could it be Forsythia (fully expecting to be shot down)!

How about being one?

Is it Golden Currant (Ribes aureum )  If so lucky you. The flowers are said to have a clove or vanilla scent.

I planted two in last autumn, a bog standard one and a named variety. Looking forward to one or two fruits in the summer. :nowink:

Forsythia looks to be a good bet, though my Dad has something similar which has the same type of habit, it is a 'fourberry' bush which has berries like giant blackcurrants.

Thanks all - I'm thinking that the yellow currant is a good bet - though I thought the flowers were more like cowslip flowers than these open ones. I'll take a closer look tomorrow. Nowhere says anything much about the fruit beyond that it is edible. Have to wait and see.

I am not saying for certain, a close-up of the flowers and leaves would be helpful, they cannot be taken out too well for ID.
