At the end of last season a collected some of the berries and put them in a 3" pot of compost in the greenhouse. Low and behold I have around 20 spears that are thinner than matchsticks. Question is what do I do now and when should I re-pot them. They are certainly to small to go over the allotment.

I am a "chuck-it-in" gardener as someone on here used to call me. You can fiddle with them for a year. Or risk some after frost season... Not that much fiddle though as cacti from seed.

And what you do now, you hope, that most of these will be male plants. More over, cross-pollination issues as well. Whatever you get, I am wishing good luck and patience with it.

In the spring, when they start into growth, that is nowish. (I understand, you can do this in the autumn too, donno...)

You have to under-dig and lift up the whole crown carefully. The new growth is your guidance: divide so, that each division has at least two shoots on it. Obviously, the more the merrier.
