Peas in guttering...
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:19 »
I grow peas in guttering each year, but this year a section about 8" long have all failed to sprout.  Impossible for meeces to get to them so why the gap?

Next question, what's the best way to get the beggers out of the guttering!  Or do I have to buy new (shiny/slippery) guttering?

Cheers,  Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I've been told a watering can help slip them out.

Also cut them into foot lengths and slide a bit at a time.

I just use a trowel to push out a foot/12" at a time.

I tried peas in guttering twice and germination was poor both times. I think it was because they dried out so easily if I didn't keep up with the watering.

This year I've sown in pots which are deeper and much better, nearly all the peas have germinated.

The best way is with root trainers. Sow 3 seeds per cell and plant out each cell at 4/5 inch spacing without separating the plants. Plant out when just about opening the first leaves. Do not leave until the plants get floppy as they are then difficult to plant out without damage.

Peas in guttering will always be difficult to get out when you live in a house. BUngalows are easier!😐

I now grow rather a lot of peas and I always sow direct and cover with netting until the peas germinate, having given up on starting them off in pots.  I don't have any problem with mice eating the seeds and there is absolutely no faff whatsover.  I also have more space on the dining room table, kitchen windowsill and polytunnel for other stuff that really does need starting off in pots.

II don't have any problem with mice eating the seeds

Where is the 'green with envy' emoticon when you need it?   ::) :D  If it ain't mice, it's shrews or voles ...  I love my pest eating wildlife, but they wont read the memo on peas, sweet peas and beans!

When I grew peas in guttering I put a small plastic cup over each end so the water didn't drain out the ends; also I made sure the guttering was level so the water was evenly distributed. To get them out, instead of trying to shove them out length-wise I used my trowel and scooped them out over the edge into a ready-made furrow.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

All suggestions greatfully received, next time I may leave a gap in the peas to insert a trowel,

and Jazzbyrd - you should get out more!

Cheers,  Tony.
