Wire netting, so useful
« on: April 07, 2017, 19:46 »
I have a few 5 metre lengths that I keep rolled up over winter. They are indispensable to my gardening life
1st usage is after I've tilled the ground to deter cat from using it as his own lavatory
2nd usage is immediately after planting onion sets to stop birds from pulling them out before they are rooted
3rd usage is to cover new rows of seeds, again to deter cat
4th usage is for a climbing-frame (supported by canes) to support peas

Sounds good to me.

In the past I've also used a couple of rolls of chicken wire-mesh to place over my potatoes to stop the dear little foxes from digging them up or unearthing the earthing-up (That really is annoying when it looks all neat and even and took ages).

I'm interested to know how you remove all the of the pea plant once the crop is over. Patiently?

The other use I forgot about is for when you've gone over a large patch with the tiller. Spread the wire mesh over the freshly tilled earth and you can walk on it without either compacting the ground or getting your shoes/wellies filthy

Rather than rolling it up over winter, join the two ends together and fill with leaves.

Wire netting stapled onto against shed walls allows sweet peas (in pots below) to climb up to roof level. Nice display.

Also bent into 'tunnels' keeps birds off strawberries.
