I should also say I want em off as early as poss. to avoid blight. Think blight will be more of a problem than frost for my generation. But then again, all the long range points to deepening cold from the middle of next week, the issue for me being how far south it's going to get...

Yes Cawdor I understand what you are saying, but I personally prefer the less scientific approach (hate making gardening overly complicated ) but like you say plant them in March you'll do just fine  :D

I'd agree with Richy here. But if you're not sure when the right time to plant is, just watch the other gardeners on your allotment plots.

My earlies are chitting now and i will get em in in early March and probably re ridge them a couple of times so frost effect will be contained. :) but as Aunty says if the experienced guys on the site are planting then it will generally be ok as they have been there, seen it, done it, got the Tee shirt and in John's case written the book

Yes, and they will disagree, just like us. On our site watching them would give you almost a two month range to plant them. One will say it's damp and cold, the other you can't call them earlies.

I think, as far as potato tubers go, under the ground, no cold or frost bothers them, so it just does not matter.   They can rot if it's very wet though.

On the other hand, emerged foliage can be burnt by frost as Cawdor says and this can happen even in May, so it does not matter.
