Broad beans

Thinking of planting these initially in cat litter trays in the greenhouse, as opposed to individual pots.

Anyone had experience of this at all?

I've not sown into cat litter trays but I don't think it'll be deep enough and you'll end up with a tangled mess when you come to plant them out.  Why not just sow them outside when this cold snap is over

The more I think about it, you're probably right about the trays. Will still do pots though, to get them off to a good start.

Whatever you decide do not let then get leggy. As soon as you see any sign of germination put them somewhere cool and light. Outside in a sheltered spot or a cold frame are good. Plant out as soon as the first leaves start to expand.

They'll be in a well-ventilated greenhouse.

Yes, or they just shoot up almost overnight and then there's no going back. Mine are almost up, and then they will be banished to the garden

That's where my planter are, the seedlings are just 'cracking' the surface, so will be watching and waiting ready for them to go outside  ;)

They are Sutton, so being a dwarf variety, the pressure's off a bit. Better prepare the raised bed though... :)

I start mine by putting them in a bag of damp compost and as soon as I see their little roots appear, I plant them into little paper pots. Once they start to poke through I put them in the  utility where it is cool.
