Chick Pea from seed
« on: January 03, 2017, 23:29 »
Hi all, has anyone had any experience of growing chick peas?  I got some seed at RHS Hampton Court but there are no instructions with them.  Just wondering will they be ok if I sow them in pots and transplant them (mice take all my pea seeds).  Also when is the best time to sow them and what distance apart?

I grew a few last year and did exactly that, sowed into small pots, one per pot and transplanted when about 10cm tall.  They don't need a huge amount of space between the plants I did about 15 cm.  From about 15 plants I got about a kilo of chickpeas, one or two per pod.  Not sure I would bother again though!

Thanks for the idea. For some reason I assumed they wouldn't grow here. Obviously I was wrong, so they are now firmly penciled in for sowing in pots the start of March and then to the protected greenhouse before planting out May time. Am always looking to increase my store of any stored dried foods
Alternatively I might chit and then sow about 100 under some form of closh in April. Looking forward to it.

I grew some last year: they germinated well in modules and grew fast when planted out after the last frost, and started to flower. They got mown off by a rabbit, but threw out more side shoots and flowered again. Each plant had around seven or eights pods, each with two chickpeas, but if they had not had that set back I reckon they would have done even better.

Just a few twiggy sticks to hold them up, and grew them out on the open plot too. Definitely worth a go!

Can they be grown in pots/containers?

They seem to need a lot of water so as long as you're happy watering regularly, then I don't see why not.  I grew about 25 plants in about a square metre, so they don't take up a lot of room.  They are not very tall growing about a foot or so, with side branches.

Having done a bit of research tonight, they seem to need the same sort of water requirements as sweet corn, so that's fine.
I must say the yield seems it could be better than I expected, and then there's all that lovely green manure to dig in. There has to be a catch somewhere. LOL
