Rotting layers inside cabbage
« on: November 18, 2016, 18:49 »
My red cabbage looked lovely, but when I cut into it there were rotting layers mixed in with good ones.

It was disgusting and I ended up chucking it away  :(

Does anyone know why it happens and if there is anything I can do to stop it happening next year?

Might it have got very wet in the downpours? Funny you should post this as I harvested a large white cabbage last weekend & that had split through some of the top leaves plus there were loads of branding worms up inside it from the stalk end & I was going to ask about that, do you know ?😊 I've had the same with the worms before & wondered if it might be to do with the garden compost I put on the bed before planting?

Yes, I've had split ones go manky, when the rain has got inside along with worms and slugs  ::)  but this one looked perfect from the outside with no critters inside, just black slimy layers. I've never seen anything like it before  :(

I've had one or two like this, and I haven't been able to rescue enough to use, so I've given them to the chickens.  I haven't a clue what causes it though, probably just the vagaries of the weather.  Disappointing, I was really looking forward to the winter cabbages so I hope the few I have left are ok.
