Apple tree: suggestions please
« on: November 10, 2016, 19:49 »
Hi,
I'd like to get a dwarf dessert apple tree for the plot - 2m by 2m max. I think I'd need a M27 rootstock, is that right? Also, can anyone recommend varieties of this kind of size? The kids prefer sweet apples, so that's what I'd be looking for.
And any recommended suppliers as well (though I see there was a post about this just the other day with some suggestions in).
Thanks!

Fiesta or also known as Red Pippin
Tastes sweet and lasts for a long time before going woolly.

I think James Grieve is a nice, small dessert apple suitable for small hands
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Just the one tree? Pollination limits your choice a bit if there are no other apples about.  I would look at M9 or even M26 rather than M27, you can always remove a bit of growth if you need to, but you can't add any more on.

How about something like Lord Lambourne , Sunset or Red Windsor.

Thanks for the suggestions! Not sure if I can 'stump up' for more than one tree - there are a couple of small trees on the next plot but one to mine which seem to produce quite a good crop.

J G is not a small apple, or to be honest one of the best eaters or storers. It does make a good cooker that needs no sugar .

I would say 12.5 cm (5") diameter is common . I would pick the large high apples first for fear they would splat one of my free ranging hens ! :)

I guess it depends on your soils, to some extent.  It does very well as a dessert apple up here; it's recommended as "very juicy and has a pleasant, crisp, sweet flavour. Probably the best September dessert apple, very prolific" by our local fruit experts.

However, I bow to your superior knowledge about its size!  :D

Not a bad desert apple but certainly not in the same league as a Coxs Orange which it was bred from ! :)
