Question! Albeit silly
« on: January 23, 2008, 18:51 »
I now have two female ducks and the four new Polish in one pen together. The Polish should start laying in the next couple of weeks according to the lady I got them from. However, tonight when I went to put them away I found a duck egg laid outside (unusual), sort of attached to it was what looked and felt like another shell or part of (which I could and did peel off) and then on the floor was a "thing" about 2 - 2/12" long and about 1cm wide and was again a papery bendy wobbly eggy thing  it had egg white sort of stuff inside it. What do you think it could be please :?:
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

I found a few of these when I kept ducks and rightly or wrongly always associated them with ducks possibly finishing laying for a while. Feel free to shoot me down, I don't mind crashing and burning

Thats what I was wondering Aunt Sally but I doubt it. They only arrived yesterday. But if it wasnt one of them I can't  think what it could be, I had a perfectly normal egg from the other duck so I suppose it was either a Polish eggy or an alien eggy from Jemima the duck.

I just looked at the omlet thingy and this thing was nothing like one of those and it was right next to a normal (apart from the extra shell) duck eggy.
Apart from that, they have been laying constantly since before Christmas so would it be normal for them to stop laying so soon Bodger :?

If it s a duck egg, this would fit in quite well. Although some ducks (Welsh Harlequins in particular) will lay throughout the winter months, a lot wont.

Duck eggs are always much more plentiful during the summer months. The only thing that I can say is that although I've found a few of the things that you describe, I've never had a problem with any of the ducks health wise after having found one.

Bodger is right

If it was a duck then it well get over it fine,  If it was a hen (what age are they ?) they may need some extra calcium to get their egg laying mechanism on line.

Quite possible Aunt Sally. I got them from a lady who breeds all sorts of chickens. I have been to her before, she uses the same food as I do but I don't know if she gives them oyster shell and grit. Anyway, they are getting lots of greens and stuff now so it should sort itself out. I don't think it was the chickens tho. I don't know exactly how old they are I can only go by what she said about them starting to lay soon. They are so lovely and will be very tame I think. :D
