Runner bean with large red flowers?
« on: September 02, 2016, 12:11 »
On the allotments one huge tepee of runners looked wonderful, and stood out from the rest with large red flowers and plenty of them. I thought I must grow some of them next year. Unfortunately the plot holder cannot remember which variety he planted :(

Has anyone grown a variety and noticed that the flowers were more decorative than normal?

Don't suppose he can remember where he got the seed from?

That may help narrow it down e.g. a specialist variety or one of the very common F1s sold in bulk / loose.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Werent Firestorm were they, im usually an advocate of white flowered runners, this year i grew Firestorm and White Lady(my usual banker).
However, the White Lady dropped most of their flowers, were stringy very early on and were a general disappointment.
The Firestorm however were wonderful, didnt drop one flower, set well and even with fully formed beans in the pod were not stringy at all.
They were both grown in the same 32' row, just split half way along it so both had a side in full sun and a side in partial shade.
The Firestorm are still producing flowers whereas the White Lady have given up.
Political Correctness-a concept based on the idea that its possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I have grown Firestorm this year.   Very productive.  They don't drop flowers as they are a cross with a French Bean, with the intention that they bring some of the self pollinating attributes of french beans to the runner bean party.   I didn't realise when I bought them that they are F1s, so I might not have bothered, however I have a good crop.

The flowers are definitely very red, but I can't say I noticed that they have been bigger than other flowers.  I will look more closely when I go up to the plot tomorrow.
