small seed onions developing
« on: August 18, 2016, 15:09 »
I left some onions in last year which went to seed this year.
Small onions have developed at the end of the stalks where the flowers were.
Will they grow into large onions if I plant them?
Should I plant them now or keep them till spring?

Thanks, BabbyAnne. I will plant some straight away.
It seems that the bulbils are genetically the same as the parent plant, which is good because the original onions were grown from white rot resistant seed.
I have a lot of white rot on my plot and the fact that these onions have survived for over 12 months means that they must be very resistant.
Interestingly, only two of the original onions have produced bulbils. I have half a dozen more which are still  in flower with no sign of bulbils being produced.
