Harvested potaotes tiny
« on: August 10, 2016, 06:29 »
Hi Everyone
Well after the blight the tops burned, now time to dig!!,1st plant dug small potatoes,2nd one dug same again,we dug 10 plants and i got marbles just enough spuds to cover the bottom of the bucket ,we had them for tea with home grown carrots.
They were very nice, just not enough and to think i was going to buy potato sacks to put my huge harvest in!!!.
Try again next year and put them in alot earlier.Lillileaf

you are describing every years crop of potatoes I have ever had - up until this year. This year of course, expecting my normal luck I planted about 70 potato plants, the first 3 rows have delivered up half a potato sackful and there are still 6 more rows to go.
we do the impossible daily, miracles take a little longer.

setanta  is a main crop rather than 1st or 2nd earlies. How close were they planted and how deep and did you earth up? Were they chitted first? Have you been watering often as potatoes are very water hungry?

Are you sure you had blight as it has been fairly dry?

Hi
I know they were a main crop potato,i bought them from thompson and morgan ,they were at least 18" apart, and they were earthed up well and at least 15" deep, watered well.
They were chitting nicely before i planted them,i am 100% certain it was blight.
I will try again next season, they are small but they tasted very nice, thats one thing with gardening you never stop learning its a very fasinating hobby and im hooked :)

Main crop is normally ready in September, so if it was blight (which also affects tomatoes) then that would have killed the plants.
Affected horse manure can also cause problems as well as white onion rot from up to 15 years.
