Devastation
« on: August 08, 2016, 19:00 »
  Hi everyone
Well thanks to the strong winds,i did not know weather to laugh or cry,i have lost my whole lot of runner bean plants and supports, wrecked the onions and the sweetcorn :(,this was the 3rd lot of runnerbean seeds to go in,i am doomed to not have runner beans,or anything else tall, damn winds came at the wrong time, well i got a few beans in the freezer.
But i will dust myself down and put my head up high, and try again next year ::)Lillileaf

Bad luck! Could you pull the sweetcorn upright and stake them to save them?

And also the beans?

They're tougher than they look, and even a few survivors will get going again, and they don't have to be up poles, they're quite happy trundling along the ground!

Same thing happened to mine, wrecked the supports too. Repaired them this morning, and gave them a good watering, we'll see how they fare. It is disheartening though.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

After coming home from work had a good look at the damage, saved about 6 bean plants, although a lot of wind damage, the rest of the beans and supports landed on the onions so they are flat, have put supports around the sweetcorn, fingers crossed we may be able to salvage some thing.

with the damaged ones, just cut them down to half size or less and give them liquid feed to see if you can get a regrowth.  Put some extra support on the canes going diagonally across all the other canes.  (so a few //// canes.)

Thanks everyone for your help, there was so much wind damage to the plants the leaves were black, the main stems were broken in several places,we have saved about 6 younger plants.
Next season we are going to grow then up the side of the veg cage, the few i had climbing up there had no damage.
Bamboo canes are not strong enough,we are about half a mile from the sea,on the north west side of Anglesey we get the very strong wind here.
