Locating fruit bushes
« on: August 05, 2016, 21:46 »
I've got 3 gooseberry bushes to move and 2 new lingonberry bushes arriving soon and 2 areas to fill.

Area 1 is about 50/50 shade and sun but is very sheltered (the shade comes from very tall trees a short distance away) but that block all wind etc). My blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes are in a similar location and thrive here.

Area 2 is slightly more open and gets sun about 80% of the day.

Would a particular area be preferable for any of these bushes do you think? At the moment I am thinking gooseberries in area 1 but no real reason for this other than I remember reading they are quite shade tolerant?

I guess it depends which crop you like best. Gooseberries will do ok in partial shade, but do better in full sun. So put your favourite fruit in the part that has the most sun because you should get a better crop there  . :)

If you are aiming for dessert gooseberries I would put them in the sunnier spot, if just for cooking either will be fine.

I have since done some more reading and think I am going to go with your suggestions of the gooseberries out more in the sun as lingonberries seem a bit more hardy(hence why they are so popular in Scandinavia I guess!). Once they arrive they will be going in!
