houseplants in aquarium etc/vivarium
« on: July 31, 2016, 19:33 »
I love houseplants (mainly Christmas cacti, African violets, orchids and gloxinia).  However I have a problem with mould in my house and so want to reduce the humidity.
Has anyone kept any of these in tanks?  And if so any ideas?  Would this solve the problem?  I guess sealed containers would be good for the plants and the house as the house would get less humidity and the plants more.

Are you sure that all of those plants like growing in humid conditions?

Growing in a vivarium is quite a specialist thing and I'm not familiar with it.

However, if you've got mould in your house I very much doubt that the plants are to blame; it's far more likely to be an air circulation and ventilation issue.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am not 100% sure, I think the orchids would like it.  People blame the plants which causes pressure on me.

TBH, I think you and the plants are being unfairly scapegoated.

What sort of mould is it? Black, often high up on walls?  Plants won't cause that.  It's human lifestyle issues (assuming no structural problems with the property).

Keep lids on pans when cooking; when showering, close the bathroom door, open windows and run the extractor fan (leave the windows open until the humidity has gone); do not dry clothes indoors; keep circulation going in the house generally.
