same for me The cracks in the hard clay ground are so deep I think I must be watering Australia  ::) Its strange as some of the showers we have had are local but missed us

It's the same here in the SE and my plot is at the top of the slope, the soil is dust in some beds and concrete in the others.

No rain here since the 12 July and one of the driest months, only 9mm in total this July. Been the lowest month since April 2011 when we had 6.5mm.
The hose and watering cans have been working overtime this month.
Looks like Monday evening and night could bring a good soaking for us here in the south.

Very little rain here for the past few weeks, and the top 6-9" of my sandy soil dries out very quickly, which means that everything shallow rooted (i.e. pretty much all my veg and fruit crops) need watering regularly, although not quite as often now as during the recent mini heat-wave.

Luckily I have 3 water butts and a hose (and no water meter!  ;))
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Had the hose out in the May/June drought we had here, but haven't needed it since, have had regular rain, often overnight. Great for the lettuce and soft fruit, and I don't think I've ever seen the parsnip tops get so high.

Have you had much yet Juvenal? Apart from a bit of a shower last week that didn't do any good we're as dry as as dust here and no rain in sight for the foreseeable...hardly any since end of June, butts empty and no mains supply on our patch.  Carting it from home but on a meter there...

Soil has set like concrete here, had to water to soften it so I could lift potatoes and plant leeks  :(

Potted up my winter cabbage, cos it's easier to water them in the garden, than keep them watered at the allotment.

Here in Cheshire in rained non stop throughout June & into early July. We've had no rain for about 10 days now but when i scratch under the surface the soil still has plenty of moisture.  I've not had to water the plot at all this season.

@bumblejoe...

Same as you. One miserly downpour for a couple of hours and nothing more for weeks. Butts empty, so trudge to the official water trough with cans. Carting from home seems really hard graft. It's been a tough year all round. Even my normally reliable onion crops are half the size I usually get. The soil is a harsh mistress, as they say....

No rain here either for weeks. My soil is not like MoS's concrete though, it's like dust. Digging up potatoes means choking in clouds of it.

My sandpit is dust dry too  :(

I struggle in a normal  year but it's really bad this year. I've been carrying watering for what feels like months. I was trying to dig some holes in the raised bed yesterday to plant trees and they just kept collapsing in on themselves

Rain here Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on which weather forecast you read..

Despite several forecasts promising useful amounts of rain over the past 3 weeks or so, the most we've actually had here was a pathetic 1.2mm last week, and none at all since then.

I try to be as frugal as possible with water, but with free draining soil I still am out with the hose every day.

No rain forecast until Friday afternoon, but I'll believe it when I see it (cue flash flooding! )
