When to pick aubergine
« on: July 10, 2016, 08:09 »
Morning all,

I was wondering, if aubergines can be picked at any time realistically over about 3 inches?

Or are they best left until
Getting to about 6-10 inches?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I pick mine at 4 or 5 inches whilst they're still shiny.
Once the skins go dull they are past their best.

As mum says but watch out for the spiky bits at the top where they join the stem, ouchy, ouchy

I suppose I should qualify this by saying "I used to pick mine......." I haven't had a successful harvest for years  :(

I am just waiting for a flower, let alone a fruit.

If they are a variety that grows large, then about six inches is good and also allows the plant to carry on flowering, with a feed or two. The smaller varieties are better at about three inches. Better smaller than larger really while their skins are still tight and shiny, like MoS said. My largest fruit is still only about four inches long so it'll wait a while
