carrot/beetroot problems
« on: July 07, 2016, 16:33 »
Hi all,
Trying to work out why I can’t grow carrots or beetroot. I’ve sowed entire packets of seed at various times since spring and while a few seedlings popped up, they never really grew and were picked off by slugs. I have no crop whatsoever. The soil is not great but not terrible. Its possible I haven’t watered enough, but I have grown these previously with little care.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!!

i usually have trouble in past years with carrots. so this year i tried broadcast sowing and had great success .it,s a pain thinning them. also try sowing in tubs .i always set beetroot seed in modules and plant out in rows. when large enough. start these off in greenhouse. it,s not to late to start them off now. hope this helps. cheers WRINKLY1

My beetroot sowings haven't come to anything either this year so have taken advise from plot neighbour and sown some in pots today so at least they will be decent size when planted and will use slug pellets too!

You could try "sowing" slug pellets along with the seeds as there are tiny slugs that live in the soil and often eat the seedlings before they even make it through the surface of the soil, as well as adding a few along the row. It has certainly helped me
