Savoy Cabbage advice please
« on: June 07, 2016, 09:12 »
Hello,

Looking for a bit of advice please. I have some savoy cabbages on the go and I started out by covering them with some half circle shape netting when I planted them out. The cabbages are growing quite large now and look a bit constricted under the netting so I was wondering if I should take the netting away or if they will still be ok under it. I ask as I don't want to take it off if birds are just going to massacre them!!!

Many Thanks

Brad

Pigeons love savoys!   You are going to need to put your thinking cap on for ways to protect the cabbages and give them room to grow ....  a brassica cage (lots about them on here) instead of a cloche.  If they stay squished then they will be vulnerable to rotting.   :(

Remember that butterflies can fold their wings to get though mesh any lager than half an inch, and if the cabbage leaves touch the mesh they poke their bottoms in to lay eggs as well.

Worth the effort for gorgeous savoys though!
