Most irritating weed in your garden/plot?
« on: June 01, 2016, 16:09 »
The one that really winds me up seems to be totally endemic in this part of N Cumbria. We know it as Goose Grass but I think its commoner name is Cleavers. It seems to appear overnight entwined amongst your shrubs, thickly planted herbaceous border plants or peas and beans. It's not simple to remove despite being very shallow-rooted as the stems are so brittle and it spreads like wildfire, probably via the sticky seeds being carried on animal coats.

Latin name I just discovered is Galiuma aparine

Sticky willy. I have to clear it out of my two dogs ears after they have been walkies.

I have a small amount on my plot but I tend to kill it as soon as I spot it.

Horsetail, not particularly detrimental to the growing crops, just irritating the way it keeps popping up. In my last garden it was bindweed, you just never seemed to be able to get rid of it totally, only keep it under control.

Tormentil  Once you have it, you have it.  pretty flower but a pest,  spreads like strawberry and can be mistaken for it!!  Deep tap rooted so difficult to get rid especially in clay soil.

Speedwell... seeds like mad and then the root breaks off in the ground when you try to get rid of it, and then starts to grow again. Drives me mad!

Horsetail/mares tail, yes I know the difference😊. My 2nd half plot is riddled with it. I used to really stress about it but now I just let it grow to 7-10cms & carefully pull it up. I dig it out as much as I can but now it doesn't bother me half as much

Apart from the ivy coming over the wall Red Valerian is a right pain in the butt here.

There is so much about and with Dandelion type seeds i can see no end to it !

Bindweed, without a doubt, though I've started to get field bindweed creeping in and that seems to be even more difficult to get rid of.

Field bindweed did for me.... its tiny little thread like roots pull out white but the worst is still in the ground and continues to flourish even under black cover.  At least it doesn't grow up a stem though!  And I hate the goose grass because it covers everything within a mile of its original root!  Oh and couch grass..... but I think my bed of tomatoes really helped rid 1 bed of that last year.  So the worst?  well, it's whatever you happen to have in abundance at the moment!
