If it does get banned, what am I going to use for my driveway?  Even Glyphosate doesn't keep those darn weeds away for long!

My neighbour just covers his driveway with granular or PVD salt to kill the weeds and leaves it there until the rain washes it in. Very cheap and not a problem with it getting into the domestic drains (same stuff as in watersofteners and we use tonnes of rock salt each year too). You do need to make sure it doesn't get onto your wanted plants.

Keep hacking them out when they start to show, so they can't photosynthesise. Eventually the underground rhizomes will run out of stored energy and the weeds will die.

If the driveway is paved, then a more permanent solution would be to lift the paving, lay down some thick ground cover which blocks light, then re-pave over the ground cover.

There are quite a few herbicides suitable for paths - the big benefit of glyphosate to the gardener has always been you can kill the weeds and plant up very soon after.
Flame throwers work fairly well and you could try vinegar which I believe Brighton council has been using.

Half listening to the radio yesterday, I think someone said a decision hadn't been agreed about this yet..... Sorry its a bit vague, it was early, may have been the farming programme!!!

I believe the current license expires on 30th June but earlier discussions in November 2015, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans which is in total contrast to the UN's 's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) which classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans," - if no decision is made before the deadline, "glyphosate will no longer be authorized in the EU, and Member States will have to withdraw authorizations for all glyphosate-based products".  Because the EU are divided about re-issuing a license, I read that to mean that if they all fail to agree one way or another, the ban stands.

Great.

This is a place to arrive at with vibrant, hopeful plans for the future.

Most gardeners think that way, so, sadly I assume there must be a few that don't.

What part of 'getting a life' do some people not understand?
