Supermarket new spuds
« on: May 12, 2016, 21:50 »
My wife recently bought some new potatoes from the local supermarket, the variety was Charlotte. They were cooked in the normal way, however when eating them they had a VERY sweet taste, as though they had been boiled in sugar. Does anyone know why this may have been? ie soil conditions?

At this time of the year Charlotte's are not new potatoes but have been stored since last year.
The longer they are stored, potatoes gain extra natural sugars, which i why chips brown better at this time of the year that those in the late summer and autumn.

I've heard keeping potatoes in the fridge causes them to go sweet.

Small Charlotte and Anya have both appeared in our supermarkets recently. It used to be that potatoes this size were outgraded and fed to pigs. A bit of a con they may be, but they are nice until the proper earlies arrive.

You may well be lucky, particularly if growing at home rather than on an allotment site, but the practice of planting out potatoes bought for eating is really not advised.

Shop bought eating spuds are not certified virus free and it is impossible to tell whether a spud has a virus by sight.

Once introduced, a virus can spread quickly locally on a site, and you'd not be popular!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
