Warm enough for Peppers & Tomatoes?
« on: May 03, 2016, 10:31 »
Up here in sunny Alnwick, they reckon temps are going to be 12C daytime and 8C night for the next couple of weeks

Are these temps okay for my toms and peppers if i put  them in polytunnel.

Cheers Mal

You are talking air temperature, which is only half of it. Bury your hand in the soil.

Mal, here in north Cumbria our temperatures are quite similar. Three days ago, I was forced by lack of room in my partially  greenhouse to move six tomatoes into the polytunnel. They are about 8" high and in large pots. They seem to have shrugged of the change and as at this morning looked hale and hearty despite an overnight low of 2C

Thanks Alan.  I was just wondering whether to move some of my tomatoes from the windowsills and dining room table to my unheated polytunnel later in the week when according to the forecast the temperature should have risen a bit.  It's the overnight lows I am worrying about for the next couple of weeks.  Based on your experience I will give it a go.

I've not done it yet - but if you do go ahead make sure you have fleece handy for any cold nights.

Quite right, Mum.

Toms always need some hardening off as well, so a jolt in the cold outside will not help the little chaps either!

If it's possible, give them a few days to acclimatise to the cold, old days we're getting at the moment...

It does look OK for the next ten days but after that.... mid May frosts are quite usual even down here, so be prepared!!
