2yr old cordon apples
« on: April 17, 2016, 10:21 »
Hi all,

I planted 5 cordon apples against the wall in my garden, this is their second spring. Some of them have got quite a few fruit buds on.

My question is whether you think I should let them flower/fruit(hopefully) or whether to remove the flowers?

They produced some flowers last year in their first spring but I pinched them out.

Many thanks

Rootstock? I'd imagine they've had time enough to put down enough roots to support a crop, after all that's what you're growing them for  ;)

Id let it flower but for this year be pretty harsh thinning out fruit to leave just a couple so you can check it's the right apple.

They were bought as cordon trained apples, I think they are on m9 rootstocks.

I will let one or fruits develop hopefully, I can't wait now!

I don't want to overdo the trees and not get good results in future!

Thanks for the help!

It should be okay on M9.

Thin out the fruitlets after the June drop to improve the fruit size, taking out the king fruits (centre one) by preference. Leave only about 2 fruits per bunch.
