Daft question about composting...
« on: April 13, 2016, 08:32 »
Can I compost nettle roots?

I have at least one bin which I can dump everything and let it sit, basically forever, as at the moment all of my "immediate" composting is done in a tumbler.

I can't burn anything in my garden, as we have a no smoke rule in the village, but it is such a faff to take everything to the green tip.

Thanks!

You can compost nettle roots, or any other perennial weed roots, if you stick them in a bucket of water for a few weeks and rot them first.  Be warned, the resultant sludge stinks, but you can then empty it into the compost heap  :)

Aww it stinks alright ...but worth the effort as it enriches the compost rather well

Chop it up a bit, it will rot quicker.

Draw off some of the liquid, dilute it and water your brassicas with it. It's high in nitrogen.
