Raspberry - primocane/floricane help please
« on: April 02, 2016, 19:53 »
Nothing seems to be simple...

I've tried looking online to see if my raspberries are summer or autumn fruiting, but I can't find much information - goggling brings up more American nursery sites, and there is no information on pruning information.

I have:

Heritage (double cropping)
Neva (double cropping)
Golden Everest (double cropping)
Willamette (early)
Jewel (mid season)
Glen Ample  (mid season)
Autumn Amber (double cropping)

I need to label them with how to prune otherwise I'll probably prune them the wrong way round, and every end up with any rasps!

thanks in advance!

The double cropping are what I prefer to call Autumn raspberries. Some bright spark found a way of pruning them so that they will produce a small summer crop, but imo it makes the autumn crop smaller, and it includes 2 different sorts of winter pruning rather than just chopping them all to the ground in winter. As you already have summer rasps to plant, I wouldn't bother to double crop.

Fab, thanks mum. If I know which ones are which they should be safe.  I have no intention of trying to get a double crop -  I just need to know which canes to prune in winter :D

Yes, I have tried that "double cropping" too and found that I  get more and better quality fruit by leaving them all as Autumn fruiting. Time to cut all those ones right down!

The others are earlier and will be floricanes and only need their old fruited growth removed... if there is any on young canes of course.
