Trikidiki, I do mine by planting them in a well prepared bed (this year with a handful of chicken pellet manure in the bottom) about 3 inches down.  I'll earth up as we go as the shoots come through.  My ridges only ever get about 4-5 inches tall.  I mulch with grass clippings throughout the growing phase.

I do short rows across too - 3-4 spuds per row in a 4ft bed. After double digging and regular hand weeding I have very few weed issues. And nearly none once the foliage is up.
Hi Surbie, am really interested in your method as my beds are the same size but have planted in the traditional way in the last two years (only started this game 2 years ago) so only manage to get in 24 spuds, looking at your pick you have 44! As I have once again gone a bit mad and bought a lot more than this your method would mean I could use them all.  I see you earth up straight away so do you plant them at the usual 5 inches or so? Just trowel them in? Grateful for more of your wisdom!
